Respect Due: ILL Nino /Larry

 We missed his birthday here at Deep Dope Soul but we will not miss this chance to celebrate DJ ILL Nino an Atlantic City Original.

Though he calls Florida his home now...Larry (his birth name) will always be claimed by Atlantic City and most especially by
the DJ community here.

We at Deep Dope Soul salute and tell the world..."Give That Man His Respect."

Reason One-CULTURE
Deep Dope Soul is about respecting everything that is fly and nice about culture. 
There are few people that I know that can discuss culture from comics to comedy from hip hop to Black history like ILL Nino.

If I told you about our real conversations? I'd have to kill you....seriously. Even when we dis-agree on culture, he always makes valid points.

Reason Two-STYLE
Nino is one of the few Non NBA/pro sports brothers I know that had a shoe contract.
I don't know if he had a whole contract? I do know that companies were sending him game shoes, and all kind of exclusive gear.

Besides the shoes, Nino stays in style with grown man hip hop wear.
The jeans aren't skinny but the style is always on 100.

Reason Three-KING OF THE ACAPELLA MIX
It took The Fleet DJ's less than 2 years to figure out what AC already knew. 
Nino is a BEAST of a DJ.
He is highly skilled! Nino's skills maybe shine the brightest these days with his acapella mixes. He has exclusive acapella tracks of every genre of music that he mixes with hip hop and R&B.

Reason Four-NINO Is In My All Time DJ Top Ten
I love to ask DJ's that know Nino about Nino.
It's always the same reaction... "He's a problem."
Not a problem from hard to work with....but a problem from hard to follow his set. A problem from matching his skills and music IQ. Nino may be the nicest DJ that can do so many things on a turntable or controller. Nino does these things at a higher level than most celebrity DJ's. He's got great cuts and scratches , can blend with the best and has forgotten more about the art of DJ/turntablism than most DJ's have ever learned.

Reason Five: FAMILY

NINO is everything I have said he is and more. He is also my family.
Nino is in my top 3 favorite DJ's... But Larry...is one of the best dudes I ever knew and is like the older brother I never had.
When I got my first 1200's he helped me get them set up properly and I copied his set up down to the Public Enemy Greatest Misses Slip Mats (still the best I ever owned.) 

I rode with Larry to my first Philly concert and he was the person to show me where The Funk-o-Mart was in Philly and even where to park.

The world wide web is NOT big enough to express what the brother means to me beyond music.

I am blessed to call him a friend.

Between DAPHNE and DAVE

I just finished watching Dave Chappelle's new NETFLIX special The Closer.
I understand why some people are upset but I maintain it's a very sticky situation.

We're from different generations and please believe there were people that were older folks that did not get Dr. King or Malcolm X or Marcus Garvey or Stokely and I can go on and on.

There are worlds of distance between people born in the 60's and 70's and people born in the 90's 2000's. No we're not all right and you younger people are not all wrong.

Here's my most honest thought.

The best part of the whole special was the last 20 minutes when he discussed his friend DAPHNE.

The fact that DAPHNE was trans-gender was of no note of all....until...it painfully was.

I respect that Dave explained that he will do no more trans jokes until he is positive that we are all laughing together. I know that many people calling for him to be "cancelled" missed that and perhaps the story of his friend Daphne.

I for one am glad I stuck around.
I am glad that I have the type of mind that can engage with a Trump supporter or Biden supporter. Neither scare me personally, neither make me super excited about the future. I can hold and discuss many different thoughts on sexuality, human rights, hidden agendas and not feel like people are my sworn enemy for seeing different...TODAY.

I just believe that in order for things to get better we do have to expand our thought process.

So if you can't co-sign Dave or if you are not sure what to make of  trans people....just try to remember the part of us that are "people." We all want to be safe and well. No matter who we vote for, no matter who we call God, no matter who we love.

My whole point is that I am less worried Dave getting cancelled (and I am) but more concerned about the safety and well being of this world's Daphne's and George Floyds and Elijah McClain' and Matt Shephards and I could go on.

God has Blessings that he has crafted just to make you happy...TODAY!

The only catch is that you've got to claim them.

I did not post those pictures to brag about meeting people or accomplishments. I work hard and that's no lie.

I have however, been blessed and I know that.

When I picked up an issue of The Source Magazine and they were on the set of the now classic film NEW JACK CITY. 
I told myself and God, that I want to be a part of this movement in journalism.

Now!
I had to do a little more than just tell God I want it.
I had no idea how I would get there but I started moving.
I started writing.

One day I was in my office at The American Red Cross and my phone rang. It was my brother telling me Kenny Miles from The Source Magazine had gotten my package of clips (clips that were sub par "BUT GOD"!) Kenny wanted me to contact him and start pitching ideas.

Right now as you are reading this. God has angels with arms full of blessings for YOU! 

1. You have to claim them. You have to know that you are as great a poet, author, artist, actor, film maker as any that ever was created.

2. You have to START STARTING!
Make that first video and post it.
Write that first poem.
Get on stage at the open mic.
Get that first story done.
Expand that doodle to a painting!
God Can't Bless You Until you
START!

3. BE READY!
The reason God wants to BLESS YOU?
Is because your voice will bless someone else.
After God, family and friends...my biggest blessings come from exploring other peoples arts.
I remember quotes that enrich me every day. I have pictures in my tablet that make me want to paint everyday.

Then in times when I may think my poetry is small, my events are unappreciated or no one likes www.deepdopesoul.com?

Someone tells me that I inspired them. 
And if there is a drug cooler than that? I don't want it.

I am not going to detail about my blessings here...because they are for me...God has special blessings he's holding for you. 
Claim them now!
Do not worry about who hurt you in the past.
Don't keep replaying whoever said you can't.
Dwelling on past hurt will not take you where you want to go today.
What I remember from the past is that call I got from The Source and I knew my life was going to change.
I want everyone ...I ever knew (even people that don't like me) to feel the unbound happiness I felt when I realized I would indeed be a part of the journalism movement that created The Source Magazine. Today I am blessed because now Deep Dope Soul represents a movement that (we hope) blesses artists and writers will we say... "we want to be involved in this movement."

A Matter Of Opinion Number

 My Problems with Historical Black Fiction Film 

or 

Why I'm Not Excited (YET) about

The Harder They Fall.

Many my friends have been asking me why I have not been posting everywhere about ....what I know will be a great film called
The Harder They Fall!

The Harder They Fall is a new western with all star black actors including 
Regina King and Indris Elba.

Normally I would be excited.

BUT.

I still have "black people lose"  hangover from so many films about our "history."

I love Posse. A great western. However, I am not going back in the theater or getting excited about The Harder They Fall because I have a feeling...it's going to spend the first quarter of the movie introducing some dope characters.

Then after we get to see them kick the system in the teeth....the system with hunt them down one by one with the tail told by an old survivor.

I have nothing more than a feeling of hangover from Posse to go on...and the fact that this is a common trope for black films and some action films like The Dirty Dozen.

I will support The Harder They Fall but after the year I had. I want a film with the spoiler "Black People Win and Do Alright and Live Their Best Life at the end of this film."

Save Me Some Pop Corn.

Celebrating Life! Back Outside! About Last Night!

I should be sleep right now.
But I want to share this wisdom before it escapes me.
ENJOY YOUR LIFE TODAY.

Man. 
I used to see Rich Medina a couple times a week. Every week.

He's a member of The AC crew of DJ's.
Every time I see him he asks about my brother Mark, my brothers Larry, Thadd and Shawn.

However, work, family, life keeps us so busy we are lucky if we see each other every five years!

Then last night I ran into Naila, Irize and I met FREE and we cut up like we been knowing eaach other since the 1990's.

I am blessed to have survived 2020 and I know it.

If I would have stayed home last night...I would have missed so much beautiful life.

More went on than I captured on grainy camera phone pictures.
I only wish I had bought the real camera...but the love as always is 100%.

Whoever you love on what ever level ...be around them...shine on em....and enjoy your life.

Tomorrow at 12pm
Deep Dope Soul will unofficially start our educational programs by giving a ways hundreds of dollars of free comic books.
Marvel books including characters like X-Men, Avengers and Hulk.
DC books including Superman, Batman and Harley Quin.

These books are part of the personal collection of Raymond Tyler.
Some books were also purchased from discount bins at Level Up Entertainment and Fat Jack's Comic Crypt.

Every Friday The Mighty Writers hosts a children's book give a way.
They also give a way fresh produce and items for new babies like diapers.

The food and items go fast so people are encouraged to come early.

Deep Dope Soul is also co-sponsoring an event August 1st that celebrates
people of color that create and enjoy sci-f, comics and fantasy.
